Parents and Teachers Must Advocate for Gifted Children

What does it mean to be gifted in America, and who is watching out for gifted children?


As surprising at this might seem, there are no federal laws that safeguard the civil rights of gifted children. Further, aside from offering some competitive grant money, the federal government does not fund gifted education. The response of the American government is almost like saying they are smart enough to be able to take care of things by themselves.

No, they can’t.

Along with remarkable state and national advocacy groups, the answer must come back as the parents, teachers, and supporters of gifted children. Some of the best educators I have ever known are GT teachers, or actively support gifted programs in their classrooms. Moms and dads of gifted kids are also pretty special people; they know personally how much effort and love it takes to raise a gifted child.

The message for this Blog is pretty short and sweet: if you have a gifted child or teach a gifted child, don’t rely on big government to help you out. You have a very special and valuable ‘gift’ in your home or classroom, and your good efforts will help. Get as much support as you can from the advocacy groups, stay strong and stay your course!
